Raya and the Last Dragon

Raya and the Last Dragon is a 2021 animated fantasy adventure from Disney, set in the vibrant, mythical land of Kumandra. Directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, the film tells a heartfelt and action-packed story of unity, trust, and resilience.   Kumandra is a once-prosperous kingdom where humans and dragons lived in harmony. However, an ancient evil force called the Druun threatens their existence, turning people and dragons to stone. To save humanity, the dragons sacrifice themselves, leaving behind only a magical gem to protect the land. Centuries later, the kingdom is fractured into five warring tribes: Heart, Fang, Spine, Talon, and Tail, with the gem kept in the Heart tribe.

The story follows Raya (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran), a courageous warrior from Heart, who embarks on a perilous journey to restore peace after the gem is shattered and the Druun return. Raya’s quest leads her to Sisu (Awkwafina), the last surviving dragon, who possesses both magical powers and an infectious sense of humor. Together, they travel across the diverse regions of Kumandra, seeking to recover the gem’s fragments while facing dangerous enemies and learning to trust others.

The film explores Raya’s evolving relationships with a colorful cast of characters, including a rival-turned-ally, Namaari (Gemma Chan), whose own loyalty and motives are tested. The narrative focuses on themes of trust, forgiveness, and the collective effort required to heal a divided world.

Visually stunning, Raya and the Last Dragon combines Southeast Asian-inspired landscapes, vibrant animation, and thrilling action sequences. Its emotional depth and humor resonate with audiences of all ages, delivering a timeless message about the strength found in unity and belief in one another.
